Contains personal and official correspondence (50 letters, manuscript and typescript). essays, articles, and legal documents.
The bulk of the correspondence consists of manuscript letters from Baker with accompanying typescript transcriptions (some
are partial). Some of the original manuscript letters transribed are not in this collection and consists solely of the typescript
transcription itself. Correspondence is between family members, politicians, and government officials, some in Baker's capacity
as the U.S. Minister to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and El Salvador or recommending him for the post. Typescript essays and articles
cover topics related to Baker's experiences in Central America including descriptions of his travels to Managua, Nicaragua,
San Salvador, El Salvador, Costa Rica, coffee plantations, and train rides. Also contains correspondence (13 letters, in Spanish,
no transcripts) on letterhead stationery of the President of Nicaragua addressed to Baker and signed by President José Santos
Zeyala. Also contains a Ministry of Finance legal document (in Spanish) appointing Baker as attorney of the State of Nicaragua
and a folder inscribed with an invitation to a meeting with the Foreign Minister of El Salvador.

Lewis Baker was the Democratic President of the West Virginia Senate from Ohio County and served from 1871 to 1872. On February
1, 1885 he purchased the St. Paul Globe and moved his family to Minnesota. In 1893 he was appointed as the United States Minister
to Nicaragua, Costa Rica and El Salvador. He sailed from New York aboard the ship Costa Rica on April 29, 1893 with his daughters
Anne and Virginia. They arrived in Managua, Nicaragua on May 12, 1893 in the midst of a revolution. Baker died in 1899 and
was buried with his wife in Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia.
